Understanding 3-, 5- and 7-ply corrugated packaging

How corrugated board is constructed and why the number of plies is only one factor in protecting goods.

How is corrugated board constructed?

Corrugated board combines flat liners with fluted paper forming a cushioning layer between them. Three-ply board has one flute layer between two liners; five- and seven-ply board add alternating flute and liner layers for greater thickness and strength. This is a general description of corrugated board, not a specification exclusive to FUCACO products.

Ply count is not the only factor in strength

Paper grade, flute type (B, C, E and others), box dimensions, load, handling and transport conditions all affect carton strength and protection. Ply count is one factor, not the sole measure of packaging durability.

Choosing a suitable carton structure

FUCACO's 2023 Company Profile lists 3-, 5- and 7-ply corrugated board and custom die-cut boxes for different packaging needs and loads.

Selection note

Suitable carton structures and specifications must be confirmed against the load, dimensions, handling and transport conditions of each shipment. Please contact us for specific technical advice.
